The architectural center of the Citadel is the garrison St. Nicholas Church, built in 1851–76.
The total area of the fortress is about 4 square kilometers.
From August 1915 until the end of the First World War, the Brest Fortress was occupied by German troops. In 1921, under the terms of the Riga Peace Treaty, it ceded to Poland, which included it until 1939.
In 1939 the Brest Fortress was transferred to the Soviet Union.
